The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), an institute of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) run by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, defines the differences between Complementary, Alternative and Integrative Healthcare quite well. In short, if a "non-mainstream" approach is utilized "together with" conventional care, it is considered "complementary." An example of this might be the use of acupuncture after a surgery to aid in facilitating a swift recovery or the use of acupuncture while taking antihypertensives to aid in maintaining healthy blood pressure. Alternative Medicine on the other hand is the use of approaches outside of the mainstream which are used in place of conventional care. Integrative Medicine and care though is the use of complementary medicine in a coordinated fashion in which practitioners of both medical traditions, eastern and western, collaborate to seek the best possible outcomes for their patients. Finally, Evidence Informed Practice is a method of the practice of medicine which does not differentiate predicated on the traditions or philosophy governing a practice and instead focuses on the science of the issue at hand and balances it against the providers own knowledge and experience. Evidence Informed Practice is the next adaption of Evidence Based Practice.
