According to the Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Practice Act of New Mexico "acupuncture" means the surgical use of needles inserted into and removed from the body and the use of other devices, modalities and procedures at specific locations on the body for the prevention, cure or correction of any disease, illness, injury, pain or other condition by controlling and regulating the flow and balance of energy and function to restore and maintain health. This succinct definition captures brilliantly the full measure and capability of acupuncture. A stunning accomplishment considering it's long history and use. Of particular interest are the words "prevention, cure, or correction of any disease."  Here in New Mexico, we are fortunate to have an extremely broad scope of practice among licensed Doctor's of Oriental Medicine in the practice and application of acupuncture.
